FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- 8/22/08 BERKELEY SPRINGS, WV --- A instrumental quintet from Richmond, Virginia, Modern Groove Syndicate concludes the 2008 season of the Morgan Arts Council's summer concerts in Berkeley Springs State Park on Saturday, August 30 at 5:30pm. The concert's rain location is the nearby Ice House.
Modern Groove has a sound that includes so many influences, it defies description although classic funk with a soul/jazz flavor seems most apt. Reportedly, whatever they listen to in a day may show up in their improv work when they perform. Whatever the label, the effect is the same: to make your head spin, your soul stir and your feet need to dance.
Beginning as a trio in 1998, they kept adding members and are now a quintet. The group consists of Daniel Clarke on keyboards, Joel DeNunzio on drums, Todd Herrington on bass, Frank Jackson on guitar, and J. C. Kuhl on tenor sax. They play as a single force heavy on improvisation and original composition. Each of the five can claim a musical pedigree, some boasting family roots as performing musicians. All have impressive talent. Clarke is scheduled for a world tour this year with k.d.Lang.
"The guys in this group have played individually with dozens of famous bands and together they are amazing," says Gordon Macleod, concert arranger. " Modern Groove Syndicate is an appropriate ending for the 2008 concert series that ranks among the best MAC has offered in 21 years. No one should miss this final act."
The MAC Summer Concerts in the Park are sponsored by Carl M. Freeman Foundation. Additional funding for the free concert is provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, West Virginia Commission on the Arts and local hotel/motel tax revenues.
