AFTERSCHOOL ART SHOWCASED AT ICE HOUSE

BERKELEY SPRINGS, WV -----The traditional recital marking completion of the first series of spring afterschool classes at the Ice House in downtown Berkeley Springs is scheduled for Friday, April 25 at 5:15pm. Dozens of vivid pieces of work from the printmaking class are joined by two and three-dimensional work from the younger childrens' arts and crafts sampler all on display on the newly renovated second floor gallery space.

In addition, the afterschool dance class showcases what its students have accomplished during the eight weeks. The Ice House dance studio is also located on the second floor.

"We've extended the Ice House celebration of the Week of the Young Child to two weeks so the artwork created by RESA 8 Pre-school and Headstart students in Berkeley Springs and Great Cacapon can remain on display for the afterschool recital," said Mary Hott, executive director of the Morgan Arts Council (MAC) which produces the afterschool class. "Their work is so artistic and uninhibited, it's really wonderful. It's exciting to think that some of these little ones may someday produce work that will be on display in the main gallery."

Parents, family members and the general public are invited to the recital which will have refreshments. "We hope everyone will come and cheer on the kids," said Hott.

Printmaking classes were taught by Jane Pingleton-Evans, arts and crafts sampler by Jennie McBee and dance by Jodey Eliseo. The afterschool arts program is funded by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, West Virginia Commission on the Arts, local hotel/motel taxes, and the United Way Foundation. In addition, donations by individuals provide scholarships for students to attend.

The Ice House is located at the corner of Independence and Mercer. For more information on upcoming summer art camps for youth as well as other MAC activities go to www.macicehouse.org or call 304-257-2300.
