Swain's presentation supports the power of music in understanding the human psyche and how the kind of music an individual chooses indicates what needs balancing in their psychological make-up. "Freud taught that people did art or played music because they did not get enough sex," said Swain. "For me as a musician, Jung's view that it is all about imagination has a greater influence." Swain's presentation uses musical and video clips to illustrate both views. "The voices of both Jung and Freud are in some of the clips," she says.
Swain recently settled full time in Morgan County pursuing her interest in performing traditional music and exploring West Virginia poetry. She completed a long career in Washington, DC as a practicing psychological clinician although she continues to teach workshops at the Jung Society. Her academic background includes degrees from the University of North Carolina and Catholic University. She is a member of writers' groups in the area.
