"Raqqin' the Kasbah"
Music, Dance, and Culture of the Near East
with Jensuya, Dancer and Director of TarabRaqs--
Middle Eastern Music and Dance Ensemble
"Raqqin' the Kasbah" is an 8-week course designed to introduce elementary through high school aged children to the music, dance, and culture of the Near East.
Culminating in a final performance by all participants, the course will include an overview of the geography and history of the Middle East as seen from an artistic perspective. Through interactive storytelling, visuals such as photographic slides, music demonstrations and objects from the Middle East, the sounds and movements of the Near East will be introduced. The bulk of the course will be participants learning the rhythms and dance moves "hands-on."
$80 for entire 8 week course, starting in the Fall |

Each session will feature:
Brainy Time: a short presentation of a cultural aspect of the Near East, followed by discussion.
Raqqin' Out Time: a very short time for the kids to let loose with rhythm and movement.
Raqs 'n Rhythm Time: instructional "hands-on" time learning the rhythms and dance moves of the debke, traditional Middle Eastern line dancing.
The last two weeks of the course will focus on "putting it all together" for the final presentation.
