Contribute to the 2008~2009 Adopt A School Fundraising Campaign

The 2008-09 school year program for Adopt-a-School will begin this Fall. We will have four artists programs in the Morgan County School system. These artists will be integrating arts with the schools' reading and language arts, music and social studies curricula. We are bringing Ammed Soloman, a prominent percussionist to the K-2nd grade classes; "Barrelhouse" Bonni McKeown, a blues musician for the 5th grade classes; Kate Long and Robin Kessinger, well known storyteller/songwriter and champion guitar player to the 6th graders; and Colleen Anderson, writer, to our 10th graders.

MAC is justifiably proud of its work enriching the life of Morgan County youth with the arts. Morgan County schools are the envy of most in the state because of the number of art teachers we have as well as the additional programs both inspired by and developed by MAC. The annual Youth Art Show staged by MAC at the Ice House displays remarkable talent from literally hundreds of students and enthusiastic participation from local teachers.

We scarcely need to remind you of the immense value of exposing children to art. Children who are in school today will face the task of finding work in a new economy where the most important resource is creativity. Nothing helps the natural creativity of every child to unfold and develop more than experience with the arts whether music, visual arts, literature, theater or dance.

Adopt-a-School programs are paid for from three sources: Morgan County Board of Education provides $2000; the West Virginia Commission on the Arts provides grants of approximately $4800 and the rest of the costs are from donations from you. Click here to donate.

MAC's Adopt-a-School program owes its 2008-09 program to the hard work of Bibi Hahn and Larry Springer, MAC volunteers.

26 Years of Adopt-A-School

Presenting artists in local schools has always been a major goal of the Morgan Arts Council. From its first artist in the school just months after being established in 1977, MAC has presented the talents of more than 150 professional artists in all media to students in every Morgan County school. Close to $200,000 has been spent on artists in the schools provided by Arts in Education state and federal grants, Board of Education allocations and donations from the community.

In 1988, the Adopt-a-School program was established to formalize this collaboration. Over the years, systems have been developed to give teachers and principals ways to both evaluate programs presented and have increased say in the types of art programming done and its connection with curriculum. Based on stringent criteria, MAC's Arts in Education grants have been rated among the best in the state.

To bring parents into the equation, most Adopt-a-School artists also give presentations in the community at the Ice House concerts. Children who have enjoyed the artist in school love the opportunity to share that experience with their parents.
